Bring your Mattermost server into SphereOne.

A system admin makes one bulk export with mmctl. Upload it, and teams, channels, direct and group messages come over with their threads, reactions and attachments.

What comes over from Mattermost

Teams, channels, direct and group messages, with threads, reactions and attachments.

  • Teams and channels, including archived channels when you export them
  • Direct and group messages
  • Threads, reactions and attachments
  • People, matched to their SphereOne accounts by email

Make a bulk export with mmctl

A Mattermost system admin makes one bulk export of the whole server with mmctl, Mattermost’s command-line tool.

  1. With mmctl signed in to your server as a system admin, run mmctl export create --include-archived-channels.
  2. Wait for the export to finish. mmctl export job list shows when it has succeeded.
  3. Find the file’s name with mmctl export list, then run mmctl export download <name>.
  4. In SphereOne, open Settings › Migration, choose Mattermost and upload the ZIP as it is.

Good to know

  • Files are included unless you add --no-attachments. An older mmctl that leaves them out needs --attachments on the create command.
  • You need system admin access to the Mattermost server.

How the import works

For workspace admins on Starter, Business and Enterprise. On a free trial you can upload an export and see the full preview; running the import needs a paid plan.

  • Nothing is written until an admin confirms
  • Set a cut-off date for the day you switch
  • Any import can be undone

Preview first

SphereOne reads the export and shows you the rooms, people and message counts. Nothing is written yet.

Decide people and rooms

Link each person to a member, invite them, keep their name only or leave them out. Create each room fresh, merge it into one you have, or skip it.

Import in the background

Start it when you are ready. It runs in the background, can be paused, and duplicates are skipped when you merge.

Undo if you need to

Undo removes only what the import created. Anything your team has posted since stays where it is.
