Bring your Slack history into SphereOne.

Upload your Slack export and SphereOne brings over channels, people, messages, threads and reactions. You see a preview before anything is written, and you can undo the import.

What comes over from Slack

Channels, people, messages, threads, reactions and the list of files. Add a Slack token to bring the files themselves.

  • Public channels, plus private channels and direct messages when your Slack plan includes them in exports
  • Messages with their threads and reactions
  • People, matched to their SphereOne accounts by email
  • Files, when you add a Slack token so SphereOne can download them; without one, the list of files comes over

Export your Slack workspace

A Slack workspace owner or admin makes one export of the whole workspace.

  1. In Slack on your computer, click Admin in the sidebar, choose Workspace settings, then Security.
  2. Click Import & export data and open the Export tab.
  3. Under Export date range, choose how far back to go, then click Start export.
  4. Slack emails you when it is ready. Open the email, click Visit your workspace’s export page, then Ready for download.
  5. In SphereOne, open Settings › Migration, choose Slack and upload the ZIP as it is. There is no need to unzip it.

Good to know

  • Only Slack workspace owners and admins can export.
  • Public channels are in every Slack export. Private channels and direct messages are included only when your Slack plan allows exporting them.
  • To bring the files themselves, add a Slack user token during the import. Without one, the messages come over with the list of files.

How the import works

For workspace admins on Starter, Business and Enterprise. On a free trial you can upload an export and see the full preview; running the import needs a paid plan.

  • Nothing is written until an admin confirms
  • Set a cut-off date for the day you switch
  • Any import can be undone

Preview first

SphereOne reads the export and shows you the rooms, people and message counts. Nothing is written yet.

Decide people and rooms

Link each person to a member, invite them, keep their name only or leave them out. Create each room fresh, merge it into one you have, or skip it.

Import in the background

Start it when you are ready. It runs in the background, can be paused, and duplicates are skipped when you merge.

Undo if you need to

Undo removes only what the import created. Anything your team has posted since stays where it is.

Questions about importing from Slack

Does SphereOne import private Slack channels and direct messages?

Yes, when they are in your export. Slack includes private channels and direct messages in exports only on plans that allow it; public channels are always included.

Will our Slack files come over?

Yes, if you add a Slack user token during the import so SphereOne can download them. Without a token, the messages come over with the list of files they shared.

Can we keep using Slack while we move?

Yes. Exporting changes nothing in Slack. Set a cut-off date for the day you switch, and if you import again later, merge into the rooms you already have; duplicate messages are skipped.

What if the import doesn’t look right?

Undo it. Undo removes only what the import created, and anything your team has posted since stays where it is.

Importing from somewhere else?

SphereOne imports from 7 apps. See every import guide.
